The Country Wife is arguably one of the
best comedies of the Restoration Period (1700s). It
delighted audiences then and still continues doing so
today. The play is a magnificent acting peice which,
among the cut-glass comedies of it's period, flares like
a brilliant flame.
It is the story of Mr Horner and
the tale of his supposed impotence. He suggests this
rumor, which travels around the town enabling him to be
'a privileged man amoung virtuous ladies'. As you can
imagine, all sorts of disasters follow. The wife of the
title of the play is a Hampshire girl, married to a
tyrannical townsman - just the challenge Mr Horner needs!
