Synopsis

John Morley has elaborated this wonderful children’s fairy tale into a family pantomime full of fun and frolics.

Goldilocks is the daughter of Sadie Spangle, a vibrant circus owner, but the circus is not going well and they are in search of a fantastic animal act. Sadie’s circus is also under threat from the villainous Benjamin Black, the rival owner of Black’s Circus.

Belinda, a fairy disguised as a circus bare back rider, joins Sadie’s troupe and arranges with her mystical powers for Goldilocks to stumble across The Three Bears Cottage where she meets the bears in the traditional way. She is surprised to discover however that the Bears are all singing & all dancing and they agree to join Sadie’s circus.

They are a huge hit - the circus is saved!

That is until Benjamin Black kidnaps the bears for his own circus.

Follow the comical adventures as good triumphs over evil and the join in the celebrations at Sadie Spangle’s Circus.

Directors Comments
John Morley was inspired when he merged circus and pantomime in his fantastic adaptation of the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

'The Greatest Showman on Earth' P.T. Barnum, is closely associated with the history of circus. He allegedly brought the world General Tom Thumb, Jenny Lind, Jumbo the Elephant and created the catch-phrase "Let's get this show on the road".
Pantomime first emerged in the 18th century from French fairgrounds where they combined music and mime to develop comic characters to entertain the crowds.

The parallels between circus and pantomime are obvious - the quirky outrageous characters, the bold colourful costumes, the juvenile humour and unfaltering determination to entertain in the purest sense of the word. Both are enjoyed by adults and children alike. Their traditions are passed from generation to generation and are part of our cultural upbringing.

I have enjoyed both the circus and pantomime since I was a child and the first pantomime I remember booing, cheering and hissing at was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Since the I have appeared in many pantomimes with the Quince Players and it seems fitting that this pantomime is my first as director. I very much hope you enjoy watching the adventure as much as we have enjoyed putting the show together. I am sure P.T. Barnum would agree with our societies namesake, Peter Quince, when he said, "Our true intent is all for your delight".
