Character Synopsis

Vileun is a black-hearted villain whose only aim in life is to become the Supreme Master of the Universe. His villainy must never flag, he must be hated by the cast and audience right up to the final curtain. Ideally he should be tall and thin with curling eyebrows and a black pointed beard. His costume and make-up should be magnificently evil "Outer Space".

Astra is Vileun's henchwoman, a zany villainess. Her "trance" scenes should be played comedy dramatic and with great relish. Her costume, make-up and hairstyle should be very bizarre with astronomical signs very much in evidence.

Null and Void are a sort of "outer space" version of the traditional broker's men parts. Even though they work for Vileun this should not be held against them, they are just a couple of stupid, but lovable aliens. Null is the more intelligent of the two but only slightly. Void is a cuddly nitwit. They wear comic outer space uniforms.

Little Tommy Tucker is a cheeky little chap who takes great delight in ribbing Dame Dangle. His costume should be slightly more outstanding than the other children.

Dame Dangle is a lovable old girl who changes her moods at the drop of a hat. She should be on very friendly terms with the audience, especially the youngsters. In Act II she wears an outrageous space costume, which makes her look like a cross between Wonder Woman and an astronaut.

Roberta is an all-talking, all-singing, all-dancing, perky little Robot with ariels and a "beep". Her movements are jerky and her voice is definitely "Dalek" in tone. Her costume will be as elaborate as possible, remembering that easy movement is essential.

Professor Atnas is really Santa Claus in disguise. He must be played as a real person, a kindly, human old gent, not a "grotto" Santa. His white hair and beard must look real. His red, fur trimmed Santa Claus suit should be of the short coat variety with boots, cap, etc.

Captain Dick Daring (Principal Boy) should be the most dashing, courageous sailor. He must be the perfect hero throughout.

Crystal (Principal Girl) is Santa's beautiful young assistant at the North Pole. She should be enchanting, almost fairy-like. Her costume should reflect the part of the world she comes from, perhaps a white dress with fur trimmed silver cloak and hood.

The Dancing Doll must be a good solo dancer. Her costume, make-up and hair must be an exact copy of the rag doll carried by the 1st Girl.

The Leader of the Varborites is a small, but very important role as he/she tells us all about Prince Paragon's downfall.

The Monster of the Wilderlands could be played by a number of people in the style of a panto dragon. The costume should be comically hideous, a costume designer's dream or nightmare.

Prince Paragon of Varbos is a very small part but should be played with great dignity and a spectacular "outer space" royal costume.

The Village Children are by no means just "dressing". They all have lines to speak and participate in lots of the action and musical numbers. Their costumes should be picturesque and colourful.

The Varborites (children's parts) only appear in Act II but are very important to the story. Their costumes and make-up should be fantastically "Outer Space".

The Adult Chorus appear in Act I as Villagers, their bright, picturesque costumes befitting the rustic scene. In Act II they play the Spaceship Crew.
