Kitchen farce in
classic Ayckbourn comedy
Three couples each host a Christmas party on three
consecutive years and each time the action gravitates to
their kitchen. This classic Alan Ayckbourn comedy, ‘Absurd
Person Singular’, is brought to Sunninghill this May by
the Quince Players.
In a comedy about social status, the up and coming
Hopcrofts, anxious to impress their bank manager and his
drunken wife and an architect neighbour and his suicidal
wife, host a party. Sidney Hopcroft is clearly out of his
social depth while his wife Jane causes mayhem when she
goes in search of tonic water. However by the following
Christmas it’s clear all is not so well for the
middle-class Brewster-Wright’s and Jackson’s, respectively
the bank manager and architect.
Director, Ken Long says: “This is one of Ayckbourn’s most
popular plays, with the action in each kitchen bordering
on farce but with a darker thread running through the
comedy. The fortunes change for two of the couples as they
finish up literally under the control of the seemingly
twee Hopcrofts.”
“Each character provides the audience with wonderful
moments of humour and a range of emotions varying between
irritation and sadness as events spiral out of control at
each consecutive Christmas party” says Long.
