Obstinate and cantankerous Henry Horatio
Hobson, a widower and boot shop proprietor, is much
incensed at the general increase of ‘uppishness’ amongst
his three daughters. The climax comes when he twits
Maggie (the eldest daughter and ringleader) on her being
past the marrying age. Maggie promptly retaliates by
marrying Hobson’s boot hand, shy Will Mossop. Maggie
sets to work on educating Will who soon becomes a rival
to Hobson, who in turn disowns the whole family. Hobson
finds he cannot do without them and realises he has no
choice but to accept Will as partner in the new firm,
Mossop & Hobson. A classic British comedy set in 1880
Salford, Lancashire, Hobson’s Choice was first performed
in 1915, a touching and well written drama with richly
drawn characters and still stands today as a brilliant
piece of entertainment. |
