Another year has
flown by and we now have an opportunity to reflect. Considering our
main objective is to put on productions I think this would be a good
place to start.
The season has seen a varied selection opening
with the play "A Coat of Varnish" directed by Ronald Rush.
This was a murder mystery 'who dunnit?' which had a cast of fourteen
including two new members. It was good to see Ron back in the
director's chair and sharing his experience with the cast.
The curtain just came down and the Pantomime was
in full swing. This year we saw "Goldilocks and the Three
Bears" directed by Jenny Took. This production had a cast of
twenty-four with a mixture of long standing members, members
returning to the fold and new members.
"Happy Birthday", a farce, directed by
Allison Sharpe brought our season to a close. This production had a
cast of five existing members.
As well as a varied program the directors have
come from a good cross section of the membership. Ron Rush has the
experience of directing a number of productions. Jenny took the
baton off Ron for her first time at directing. It has to be noted
that she did a tremendous job and the end product was exceptional.
Allison has directed on previous occasions and introduced Derryl
Darling as her assistant with the production. This resulted in a
team effort each benefiting from each other. The end result was a
very successful production.
I would like to thank and congratulate all those
involved in these productions for their hard work in order to
provide a continuous success for our society.
However, the success on the stage does not
continue to the sale of tickets for all these shows. We have seen a
decline in ticket sales over the last year, even though we have a
very large membership list. The number of people in the three
productions alone total forty two plus crew, back stage and front of
house. This should generate a good percentage of ticket sales. We
must avoid advertising and selling tickets for our 'own' productions
only, we ALL have to promote every production during the year. As
well as the people involved, the remaining members in the society
need to provide support as well otherwise we are going to find
ourselves in a crisis.
This year also saw some of our youth members
entering a production into both the Woking and Spelthorne Drama
Festivals. This resulted as a wonderful experience for them and they
were great Ambassadors for the society. Thanks go to Jenny Hooper
for organising everything and directing the production. I cannot
move on without mentioning Jane Mills who was a fantastic help and
support in many ways to everyone.
This last year has seen a big effort from the
social committee in providing events and functions for our social
enjoyment. I know some have been better supported than others but
all have been a resounding success. The social events provide a
great opportunity for all members to mix together. Do try to attend
the social functions as often as possible.
"Happy Birthday" was the last production
Wendy Rowe is to run the box office. I would like to use this
opportunity to thank her, on behalf of the society, for her endless
hard work over the last five years. At the same time I would like to
welcome Suzanne Sapsed who has kindly offered to take on the role.
Unfortunately this year has seen the sad loss of
Ray Smith. Ray was a member for many years and he will be remembered
affectionately for his announcing, over the microphone, of the
minutes remaining prior to 'Curtain Up'. He was a very kind, gentle,
gentleman and he will be sadly missed.
On a happier note this year saw Ron Mills hit 80
years and he and Jane celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
What a wonderful achievement for two wonderful members in every way.
To conclude this years report I would like to
thank everyone for all of your support to me as Chairman, a job that
cannot be carried out alone. Thank you to the committee for their
support and hard work over the last year.
We must now look forward to the coming year and
build on what we have achieved. We must all make a conscious effort
to support each and every production. Let's aim for full houses. We
are in exciting times with a great future ahead using the combined
skills and knowledge of all the members.
